The city, the ring and the county

A York County locksmith, town by town

The city is home. The townships are the first ring. Then I-83 south to Shrewsbury, Route 30 east to Wrightsville, Route 74 north to Dover. One van covers it, and the call tells you the honest drive time and the trip charge for where you are before anyone starts the engine.

Trip charge $45 to $85 by distance, said on the phone, inside the job price once the job is done.

Past the townships the county turns to farms fast, and the drive time is part of the honest quote.

York city: the Avenues, the East End, downtown and the alleys

Inside the city the work is rowhome work. The Avenues between Market and the hospital, the East End off East Market, the Northwest Triangle and the blocks around Penn Park and Farquhar Park are 1880s to 1920s brick with mortise locks in solid doors, aluminum storm doors on marble stoops, and a rear door onto an alley that has had more keys cut for it than anyone can count. Downtown around Continental Square, Central Market and the Royal Square blocks adds storefront doors and upstairs apartments with a shared street door. The calls here are storm doors latched behind people, turnover rekeys on rentals, deadbolts added to alley doors, and the old safe in a basement on South George Street. Drive time inside the city is short; a lockout gets the low end of the trip charge.

The first ring: the townships and boroughs around the city

  • West York and West Manchester Township. West York's blocks are the city's rowhomes continued; West Manchester is the Town Center, the Route 30 strip, and 1970s to 1990s subdivisions with builder-grade knobs. Car lockouts in the big lots, rekeys on the ranches.
  • North York and Manchester Township. North York's brick blocks on North George, then Manchester's Emigsville and the newer developments toward Mount Wolf. Township doors take every lock in the catalog; the call is usually a deadbolt or a smart lock.
  • East York and Springettsbury Township. The Galleria, the Route 30 lots, the Harley-Davidson plant, and the mid-century neighborhoods off Mount Zion and Whiteford roads. The most car lockout calls in the county start here.
  • Spring Garden Township. The older suburb south of the city: York College, the Country Club Road and Grantley neighborhoods, 1920s to 1960s houses with original hardware and sagging doors. Lock repair and mortise work more than anywhere in the ring.
  • York Township, Dallastown and Red Lion. South and east down Route 74 and Cape Horn Road: Dallastown's and Red Lion's brick boroughs with pre-war doors, York Township's developments between them. Twenty to thirty minutes, said on the call.
  • Hallam and Wrightsville. East on Route 462 to the Susquehanna. Wrightsville's river-town blocks are old doors again; the drive is the far end of the trip charge and the honest window is given up front.

Down I-83 and up Route 74: Shrewsbury, Glen Rock, Dover, Mount Wolf

The south end of the county is where York becomes a Baltimore commuter county: Shrewsbury, Glen Rock, New Freedom and Loganville down I-83, where a lost car key strands someone an hour from home in either direction. North on Route 74 is Dover, with its borough blocks and the developments around it, and up Route 30 and Route 24 are Mount Wolf and Manchester borough. All of it is served; all of it is the far end of the trip charge, which is said on the phone, and all of it gets an honest drive time instead of a promise.

Hanover, in the west, is a different market with its own locksmiths. The van reaches it for scheduled work; for a lockout, the call tells you straight whether a Hanover shop is faster that hour.

What changes door to door

  • Rowhome in the city or a borough: mortise and rim locks, storm doors, alley doors. See rekeys and the old York doors.
  • Township ranch or split-level: standard bores, Kwikset or Schlage, deadbolts and smart locks go in fast.
  • Rental versus owner: turnover rekeys and a landlord key for rentals; a one-key house for owners.
  • A lot versus a driveway: a car lockout in a Route 30 lot is the same price as one in a Dover driveway, less the drive.

Every town, every call, the same terms

A price for the job and the trip charge said on the phone. One locksmith dispatched. Nothing done at the door until you say yes. You pay what you were quoted. That is the fair call, and it does not change at the county line. Ranges by job are on the rates page; the ones to carry in your head are $65 to $150 for a daytime car lockout and $75 to $160 for a house.

Towns too small to list get served too: Yoe, Windsor, Jacobus, Seven Valleys, Spring Grove, Emigsville, Manchester, East Prospect, Stewartstown. Say where you are.

Asked from the far end of the county

Do you cover Hanover?

Reachable, and said honestly: Hanover is half an hour west on Route 30 or 116 and has locksmiths of its own. For a lockout in Hanover the phone call tells you whether the van is the faster answer that hour or whether a Hanover shop is. For a scheduled rekey or a car key, the drive is fine and the trip charge reflects it.

Is the trip charge higher in Shrewsbury or Wrightsville than in the city?

A little. The trip charge is $45 to $85 and the far end of that is the far end of the county: Shrewsbury and Glen Rock down I-83, Wrightsville at the river, Dover and Mount Wolf north. Inside the city and the first ring of townships it is the low end. Either way it is said on the phone with the job price, and it is inside that price once the job is done.

How long to get to Red Lion or Dallastown?

Twenty to thirty minutes from the city on a normal day, by Route 74 or Cape Horn Road. The honest window is given on the call, not a fifteen-minute promise, and if someone closer to you is the better answer that hour you are told so.

Do you come to apartments and student housing?

Yes, for the resident: a lockout at the York College or Penn State York apartments, a rekey on a unit a landlord owns, a key made for a car in the lot. Lockouts in a managed building usually start with the office if it is open, since a manager can open the door for nothing; after hours the van does it, with the same proof-of-residence ask as any house.
